About the Role: Conservation Officer at Kogelberg Nature Reserve
As the Conservation Officer, you will play a pivotal role in managing protected area operations at the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Reporting to the Reserve Management, you will assist with the strategic planning and execution of biodiversity management, catchment management, infrastructure maintenance, and much more. Key Responsibilities
Protected Area and Catchment Management
- Assist in implementing the Protected Area Management Plan to ensure the success of conservation initiatives.
- Manage and monitor the biodiversity of the reserve, focusing on sustainable utilization and risk mitigation.
- Lead the charge in Integrated Catchment Management, tackling issues like invasive species, fire management, and fuel load control.
- Contribute to project management and oversee infrastructure maintenance schedules to maintain the reserve’s facilities.
Human Resource Management and Occupational Health & Safety
- Oversee the Kogelberg staff in alignment with legislative and organizational policies.
- Manage performance targets and ensure a motivated, high-performing team.
- Implement Occupational Health & Safety measures to ensure staff safety and compliance with regulations.
Finance and Administration
- Manage budgets and implement procurement policies.
- Ensure smooth financial management, including tracking expenditure and managing inventories.
Environmental Education and Stakeholder Management
- Implement Environmental Education and awareness programs, raising awareness about the reserve’s biodiversity.
- Build and nurture relationships with local communities and stakeholders, fostering cooperation in land and water conservation efforts.
Compliance and Law Enforcement
- Enforce compliance and ensure the reserve’s legal protections are upheld.
- Conduct regular patrols and respond to environmental threats or violations promptly.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Requirements:
- National Diploma in Nature Conservation or an equivalent qualification (NQF 6).
- At least three years of experience in the nature conservation sector.
- ICS 200/300 certification and project management experience.
- A valid EB (08) driver’s license and the ability to drive on 4×4 terrain.
- Knowledge of environmental legislation and GIS tools like QGIS.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work in rugged and remote areas.
Desirable Skills:
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Afrikaans.
- Previous experience in community engagement and fostering partnerships with local stakeholders.
- A passion for biodiversity conservation and a deep understanding of the Western Cape’s ecosystems.
