As a Research Technician, you will play a key role in performing microbiological and molecular tests, including those on animal feed, food, water, and veterinary samples. You will contribute to essential research efforts aimed at improving food safety and veterinary science in line with international standards such as ISO/IEC 17025.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform aerobic culture testing and microbiological analysis for various bacterial foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Salmonella, and others.
  • Conduct PCR tests for detecting foodborne bacterial pathogens.
  • Carry out Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) assays to evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility.
  • Receive, register, and properly store samples for testing and analysis.
  • Record and track results in laboratory systems and books.
  • Assist in improving and developing new testing methods in collaboration with the Head of Laboratory.
  • Provide research support and technical expertise for various projects.
  • Help maintain and improve the laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS).

Job Requirements:

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Requirements: A BSc, B-Tech, or National Diploma in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least one year of working experience in food and feed analysis.
  • Skills: Knowledge of bacterial food pathogen tests and microbiological testing techniques.
  • Professional Membership: Membership with SAVC or SACNASP is an advantage.
  • Other: Good interpersonal skills and a valid driver’s license will be an added advantage.
