Officer: Quality Assurance vacancy at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS)

About the Role

The Officer: Quality Assurance role is a fixed-term contract position ending in September 2025. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the NHLS’s Proficiency Testing (PT) Scheme runs smoothly. This will involve preparing materials for participants, capturing PT scheme results, managing administrative tasks, and ensuring that laboratories receive timely feedback on their performance.

In this role, you will directly contribute to the NHLS’s mission of maintaining the highest standards in laboratory quality, which plays a critical role in the healthcare system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation of PT Scheme Materials: Accurately prepare and allocate proficiency testing materials to participants.
  • Data Capture: Capture PT scheme results to support statistical analysis of laboratory performance.
  • Documentation: Type and maintain PT-specific documentation, ensuring all materials are up to date.
  • Distribution of Results: Distribute PT scheme results to participants, enabling laboratories to monitor their performance.
  • Coordination with Couriers: Prepare waybills and liaise with couriers to ensure PT materials reach participants on time.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Maintain temperature logs and housekeeping records, ensuring compliance with laboratory standards.
  • General Administrative Duties: Provide administrative support as required for the smooth functioning of the Quality Assurance department.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the position of Officer: Quality Assurance, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • A Certificate in Total Quality Management (TQM) (desirable).
  • At least one year of experience in Total Quality Management (TQM) (desirable).
  • At least one year of administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of administrative systems and processes.
  • Understanding of NHLS policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with accreditation systems and Q-Pulse (desirable).
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Excellent organizational skills with a keen eye for accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy, with experience in Q-Pulse being a plus.
